In 1983 a group of spirited, committed citizens turned their
energies toward a derelict, treeless area along the South
Fork of the Palouse River.  Their goal was to establish a park in
this main pedestrian passage between the WSU campus and the downtown. |

With permission from the City of Pullman, the group designed the park,
divided it into riverfront lots and auctioned the lots to individuals
and citizen groups from every sector of the community.  The trees
and flowers were planted; and in the following year, a check-dam was
constructed, creating a wide spot in the river and a lively waterfall.
The River Park spurred the University to rebuild its historic walkway to
campus and prompted the City to put in sidewalk, landscaping, and period
lighting. |

Eighteen years after its creation, the fully matured River Park
was passed on to the City.  Its features include picnic benches, a tool
shed of Northwest Indian design, a watering system, and broad expanses of grass
for picnicing or viewing the river.  The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail passes
through the River Park and continues into the downtown, shaded by a grove of
maples dedicated to the memory of John Wardwell. |

| The River Park demonstrates
exactly what the Pullman Civic Trust is all about ... improving the
community by using the skill and labor of volunteers to transform
unused or neglected areas into useful, tranquil public spots.
Hats off to Loretta Anawalt, Marcia Schekel, Barbara Petura, Jean
Wardwell and many others for their leadership in creating and maintaining
Pullman's River Park. |
