| During 2006, the City of Pullman
completed construction of the downtown link of the famous Bill
Chipman Trail creating a new way to walk or bike into downtown.
Fundraising since 2003 has exceeded our expectations; a ribbon-cutting
opening event took place May 1, 2006, in the new Pine Street
Square. The new Downtown Pullman Riverwalk has been constructed
on the northern, quieter side of the Palouse River and includes
landscaping, three pedestrian bridges, period lighting, graceful
seating and a cobblestone plaza on Pine Street. |

Path of the
Downtown Riverwalk |
The path starts from along the
River behind Taco Time, crosses Kamiaken Street, continues along
the river next to the Pufferbelly Depot, and finally connects
to an existing trail at Whitman Street. This final link completes
a continuous 7 miles of paved trail around the north end of
Pullman. |

Riverwalk includes a bridge that will cross the Palouse River
at Pine Street, allowing easy access into downtown Pullman. |

The route follows
the Palouse River on a cantilevered bridge at Pufferbelly
Depot
between Kamiaken Street and Grand Avenue. |
The Pullman Civic Trust has worked for three years on this project.
Significant work by our volunteers included:
-   Shaped and shared the Downtown Riverwalk Plan.
-   Integrated feedback from stakeholders and modified the
Plan.
-   Built concensus between planners and downtown business
owners.
-   Made presentations to over 30 different groups.
-   Worked closely with representatives from:
      WSU Administration and Foundation
      Pullman City Staff
      Downtown business people
      Pullman Chamber of Commerce
-   Began discussions among downtown business owners/managers
who now meet regularly to discuss
important issues, changes and ideas in order to improve
communication, projects and
  business success.
-   Saw economic development improve as new buildings on Main
Street began construction that would accomodate increased foot
traffic coming from the Riverwalk.
The Riverwalk project budget is now $1,070,000.   This amount
has constructed the trail as described, though additional enhancements
such as more lighting, increased landscaping and interpretive signs
may require additional funding. Donations to the Pullman Civic Trust
are still welcome. Every additional dollar will allow us to make
the trail safer and more enjoyable.
THANK YOU to all who have given a gift for the Riverwalk.
